…was in Ferns Community Centre, County Wexford, in 1995, I think. The band was called Junior’s Dad, and we weren’t great, though it probably wasn’t the smartest idea for me to publicly announce that over the mic after one song ended quite sloppily.
Our setlist that night included Seek And Destroy by Metallica (our bass player sang that one because I couldn’t do the growly Hetfield vocals), Anarchy In Bedrock by Green Jelly (yes, really), and the song in the video below, which I must warn you before you read any further HAS LOTS OF SWEAR WORDS IN THE LYRICS AND TITLE so please don’t let any young ears listen to it.
The song is by the great British rock band The Wildhearts, from their 1993 album Earth -vs- The Wildhearts. It’s called My Baby Is A Headf**k (see what I mean about sweary?) and it’s a perfect example of some good old balls-to-the-wall rock and roll. What young wannabe rockstar wouldn’t be led away by those key changes, the vocal harmonies, FOUR guitar solos and of course, the swearwords all over the place to annoy your parents?
I was led away by this song, and I still love it.
So I roped in some friends to help me record it: Steve Kohlmann on drums, Nils Kavanagh on keys, and Luke Devaney at the desk. I had tons of fun reliving my youth, and I hope I’ve improved a bit since 1995, when I couldn’t play any of those solos properly…
Last warning – the lyrics are VERY Not Safe For Work, so I’ve made it age-restricted, and you’ll have to click through to watch it on YouTube, provided you’re signed in and over 18!
